TIL that the Nile Monitor has established itself in southern Florida.  This isn’t the first invasive species to (probably) come to the American Tropics via the pet trade, but it’s one of the most destructive.  Not only do they prey on alligators, both in their nests and when they’re small, but “anecdotal evidence indicates a high rate of disappearance of domestic pets and feral cats in Cape Coral” where they’re most prevalent.
