I just watched a full-length commercial during an NFL game that consisted entirely of children quoting the Christian bible (adorably). I think that’s a first. It does a fairly good job of covering up how detestable an organization Focus on The Family is, so I guess they did a good job?

Just in case you’re unaware: Focus on The Family is the opposite of a cuddly, innocently-in-love-with-Jesus kind of organization. That the NFL took their money actually really upsets me.

  1. I’m not certain I’ve ever seen a major American professional sports league take ad dollars from an organization which has as its organizing principle a campaign to take away American’s constitutional rights.

  2. I don’t watch nearly enough football to be a judge of that, I think I’m just bringing to the table a severe lack of confidence in the judgement of those who take advertising dollars to begin with. This does make me feel, predictably, stabby.

  3. There’s an asymmetry there, Mike Knell – FotF are using biblical quotations to support their political position: “It’s in the Bible; therefore we are correct.” They can only do this by deliberately ignoring those sections of the book which are repugnant to modern morals. Scott Weston was making the point that this is hypocritical; he’s not quoting to support his agenda.
