In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade – which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point.  An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it.
Whereas in the American system, the answer to “How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?” is “Go fuck yourself,” because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities.

I’ll admit to what I think is a very American perspective on the BBC, which is that I know there are various BBCs that are ordered by number and that each has its own different character and reputation.

Nevertheless, to me The BBC is The BBC, and I started watching a BBC4 documentary called “Pablo’s Hippos” because I know that Pablo Escobar’s hippos have gotten loose in Colombia and I was interested in hearing about their situation.

This show is almost entirely Pablo, and almost not at all The Hippos.  I’m curious whether or not going into this the BBC4 brand should have been a warning sign.  Help me out, here – Should I or should I have not expected a BC4 program about hippos to be… about hippos?
