I think it’s important to understand that Feinstein’s sponsorship is in the context of her service to the media industry, which has an enormous stake in weakened consumer encryption.  Lots of people in California are acting gobsmacked that the Senator from Silicon Valley would put forth such a bill, but those people are forgetting that she’s also the Senator from Disney, and Disney’s been a heavy hitter for a lot longer than Tech has.
