I’m a very casual sportsball fan, but I think we all know that professional sports leagues are fundamentally self-centered, highly profit-focused, exploitative of both their players and their fans, and generally horribly callow in the face of any sort of controversy.
Given all of that, I think it’s important to enthusiastically applaud the NBA for this decision. It’s a very strong statement about what we as a culture are choosing to acknowledge as being fundamental human rights. This was not an easy call, and I’m extremely happy that in the end they made the right one.
