When I was re-doing my undergrad at NYU, I took an elective class on Medieval Art & Architecture. We spent a lot of time focusing on cathedral architecture, and after graduation I had a chance to go see the cathedral in Chartres in person.
The difference that the restoration work is making is absolutely astounding. It really does revert the space into one that jives with what I learned were the intentions of the builders – That it be a space of air and light, evoking heaven and the eternal. The deep, dark, gloomy Chartres I saw was impressive and imposing, but nothing like what it appears to be now (again).
I can’t wait to go back and see the change in person.
