Some – some – of the fiscal ideas over on the right are appealing to me, but as long as these are the social views espoused by some in the party, they’ll never get my vote.
Mike used to say that a lot, too. I’m curious what fiscal ideas the right has that seem viable. So far, their record is tax cuts, more tax cuts for the wealthy, and handouts to big business. I’ve heard a lot about how these people are batshit crazy on social issues, but somehow they are the economic grownups.
Not even sure what the fiscal issues are that the right can solve, since you can’t raise taxes, the idea of something like letting all income be treated the same (capital gains) and letting the social security tax go all the way up instead of being capped isn’t even discussable. We can only talk about how we (current workers) are screwed unless we..cut the taxes and stop all this Social Security nonsense! Unless Social Security is privatized, in which case suddenly it needs to stick around and grow…
The current right is completely screwed, at least fiscally, by Grover Norquist’s pledge.
As for which ideas, it was mostly if I squinted my eyes and thought about “smaller government” and such. In practice, things aren’t neat and clean like either side wishes you would believe.
