I can see the perspective she’s bringing but speaking as someone whose first experience with the show was just a couple of weeks ago, I don’t really share it. For me, the large number of spectators was integral to the emotional feeling of the show – It was the only time in my life I’ve ever thought “Were there such things as ghosts, this is what it would be like to be one.”

We followed the scenes in crowds, which arrayed themselves as best they could to see the action; As we ran through the hotel, individuals would peel off or join in – Many scenes had crowds which diffused into each other at the edges, and you could watch the osmotic pressure change in reaction to the postures and movements of the others around you. Yet for all the physicality of the press of white-masked spectators everyone respected the rules of silence, and the courtesy of distance. It was extraordinary.

I don’t doubt that the earlier experience, with so much more detail and so much more interaction with the actors was incredible. I can say for certain though that my experience – surrounded the whole might by so many ghosts – was something unique and truly glorious.
